As one of the poorest countries in the world, Madagascar only has an average of 2 dentists per 100 000 inhabitants. Moreover, these dentists are often located in metropolitan areas, leaving residents of rural areas with practically no access to quality oral health care. Determined to change this, a team of Dentius colleagues decided to launch the ‘Mission Madagascar’ project.

After a year of preparations, the first mission took place in 2019. We touched down in the capital Antananarivo and then in the remote coastal village of Salary Bay to examine, treat and inform the local population, and especially the children.

Our first mission became an unforgettable experience, which taught us a lot in terms of organisation. For example, we decided to establish our temporary practice in Tuléar, a town located in the very dry and often poor southeast of the country.

Meanwhile, our second and third mission are already behind us and we are working hard on the fourth and fifth, both of which will take place in 2025. Our goal is and will continue to be to examine and treat local children, while also teaching classes on prevention. For this, we are working with Les Enfants du Soleil, an NGO that has been providing help to Malagasy children living in difficult circumstances, such as street children and children from underprivileged backgrounds, for more than 25 years.
